Common Questions About Heating, Ventilation and Cooling
What is a furnace filter?
A furnace filter's purpose is to block out the dust and the dirt and any foreign objects that may or may not get in the way of your furnace's work. Dust buildup can decrease the amount of heat that your furnace is putting out, therefore, decreasing the efficiency of your furnace and making it more expensive for you to heat your home. Fortunately, filters counteract the dust that might get in by trapping it on the filter itself. It collects the dust and dirt so that when you are ready to clean it all of the buildup will be right there waiting for you.

However, there are many types of filters and not all of them are designed to perform the same job. Some filters only catch large pieces of dust and dirt, while others are designed to trap the smallest foreign particles throughout the air that is let in. For example, disposable filters, like those made out of fiberglass, are an example of the ones that are designed to trap only larger pieces of dust. On the other hand, there are electronic filters that are made that can catch even the smallest objects like pollen or even mold. These electronic filters actually work like a magnet to filter the dirt that they catch.
Furnace filters also vary in the amount of price that you may pay for one or the other. However, it is pretty simple. The less expensive filters would be that of the cheaper quality, like the ones made outo of fiberglass. Since those filters can be disposable, certainly they are not expensive because you'll have to buy them over and over again. Other filters like the electronic filters mentioned above or allergy filters will be more expensive because there life's use is longer than normal disposable ones.
Purchasing a filter depends on many things. You may have to consider yourself or your family's health if someone has allergies and needs a better quality filter. Or you may just need a simple one.
